Campaign to retain neurosurgical services at Dunedin Hospital
In July 2010, the Editor of the Otago Daily Times called for support from the region to “HELP SAVE NEUROSURGERY”.
“It is time for people in the South to speak up; otherwise silence will be interpreted by those who make the final decisions as assent. Today we call for residents throughout Otago and Southland to make their views heard.”
Letters to the editor, MPs, the Director-General of Health and the Minister of Health were encouraged and many stories published of how prompt treatment saved lives.
A rally was organised, petitions made and in November the decision to retain the neurosurgery in Dunedin was upheld.
