Student Newspaper Competition - How it Works

The 2017 Student Newspaper Competition is designed to encourage a new generation of creative to think differently about newspaper advertising.

The 2017 Student Newspaper Competition is designed to encourage a new generation of creative to think differently about newspaper advertising.  The media landscape has changed dramatically in recent times and now newspaper newsrooms lead the way for journalism that spans multi-media channels, with digital an important part of the mix.

Each year News Works offers two newspaper advertising awards to students at AUT, Media Design School and University of Otago's Brandbach to support emerging creative talent into the industry.  There is a first prize of $500 for the main brief and a prize of $250 for the topical brief.

This years main challenge brief is in conjunction with Drive Electric and electric vehicles targeting car buys.

The topical brief is a 48 hour optional challenge for the weekends of the 10th & 11th June and must be based around topical events or news happening that were featured in the newspaper.  The students must find a topical event and create a compelling print advertisement for a product or service.

Creative placement of newspaper advertising is also now a major part of the creative challenge.
